what is POP?

what is POP?
Its Post Office Protocol.
This protocol is used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server.
POP is used by most of e-mail applications.
There are 2 versions, POP2 and POP3.
POP2 requires SMTP to send messages.
POP3 can be used with or without SMTP.

Other protocols:
Internet Message Access Protocol ( IMAP )
Messaging Application Programming Interface ( MAPI )
